Somali Tea (Shaah)

Cook time approximately 5 minutes

Serves about 4

There are many ways to make Somali tea, this is the way I make it. You can experiment and try adding more/less ingredients until you find your favorite way.

5 Cups water

2 Tea bags

6 Cardamom Seeds -crushed

1 Teaspoon Cloves -crushed

1/2 Cup Sugar

1 Tablespoon of Nido for every cup of tea or regular milk

Add water, tea bags, cardamom seeds, cloves and sugar to a teapot. Add the nido to a mug and once the tea boils strain the tea into the mug. Stir well.

For a healthier choice try using splenda instead of sugar and decaffeinated tea bags.

  2. Oh another tip: If you don't want to strain the spices, just put them in a tea ball inside the kettle.

  5. My husband is Somali so his sister and cousins have taught me just about every recipe I know. They have been wonderful in showing me so many new foods and little tips and tricks.

  6. As salaamu alaikoum! I have been married to my Somali husband less than a year and just moved to his state about a week and a half ago. I had never eaten or cooked Somali food because we started our marriage traveling. Your videos have helped me so much! My husband loves what I make and I can freestyle a little and it still tastes good. Jazakiallah khair for sharing your skills with us all :)
