Somali Recipe for Chicken and Vegetable Biryani (Buriyani)

****My husband has begun to translate my recipes! He is very busy but he has been able to start with this recipe. It is still a work in progress but I was excited so I wanted to post out what he had done so far. The Somali recipe is now under the English recipe. So, just scroll down to find the recipe in Somali****
This is a favorite recipe of my Husbands. It has a lot of different spices but it is so flavorful. It is spicy so I serve it with yogurt. You can use any vegetables that you like, just make sure they are precooked. It seems like a lot of work because there are so many spices, but you can get all your spices measured out in a bowl before you begin so you can add them all in at once and speed up the cooking time.

Cook Time: about 25-30 minutes
Serves: 4-6

2 Cups of Rice
4 Cups of Water
1 Cinnamon Stick
3 Cloves
4 Cardamom Seeds (crushed)
3 Cloves of Garlic (crushed)
1 Teaspoon of Chili Powder
1/2 Teaspoon of Salt
4 Teaspoons of Coriander Powder
1 1/2 Teaspoons of Ginger Powder
2 Bay Leaves
1/2 Teaspoon of Garam Masala
1 Onion
1/3 Cup of Oil
1/2 Cup of Cooked Chicken (more can be used if you like)
1/2 Cup of Frozen Mixed Vegetables
1 Teaspoon of Turmeric Powder
1 Teaspoon of Cumin Seeds

In a small pan add the water and boil.

Preheat oven to 275 degrees.

In a large pan add the oil, cooked chicken and sliced onions. Cook on high until onions are soft.

Add Cinnamon stick, cloves, cardamom seeds, garlic, chili powder, salt, coriander powder, ginger powder, bay leaves, garam masala, turmeric and cumin seeds.

Stir well.

Add the frozen vegetables and stir.

Add the rice and stir well.

Add the 4 cups of boiling water. Stir quickly and cover.

Let boil for 5-7 minutes or until most of the water is gone.

Put in oven for 15 minutes.

Stir and Serve.

  1. Sounds like a healthy and delicious meal. Thanks for sharing this recipe. Where do I buy turmeric powder and cumin seeds, by the way?

  2. You can get them both at an Indian grocery store, or some American grocery stores have small containers of them in their spice aisle.

  3. Salam alaykum sister.
Thank you for this wonderful recipe. I want to cook this for my Somali husband too. If it is for 2 people, should I simply cut all ingredients into half ?

  4. Yes, you can just cut everything in half or you can freeze it if you have a lot left over. I hope it comes out well for you!
