Somali Sweet Bread (Kac Kac)

This is a sweet Somali bread. It is actually eaten more like a dessert than with a main dish. It is mainly served during Holidays. This is one of my favorite Somali foods!

Cook time about 20 minutes plus 30 minutes for dough to rest
Makes about 30-40 pieces

2 Cups of All Purpose Flour
1/2 Cup of Sugar
1 Egg
1/2 Teaspoon of Salt
1/4 Teaspoon of Baking Powder
2 Tablespoons of butter (melted)
1 1/2 Tablespoons of warm milk
Oil for Frying the Kac Kac

Add all the ingredients to a bowl starting with the dry ingredients first. Mix with hand until a smooth dough forms. Slightly wet your hands and rub the dough to keep it soft. Cover with a wet towel and let it rest for 30 minutes.

Lightly flour a counter and roll the dough to about a 1/4 inch thick. Cut it to shapes, squares, diamonds whatever you choose.

Heat oil on medium high (about a 7 on the stove) add the Kac Kac to the oil and fry until brown. Drain on a paper towel. Serve.

  6. Assalamu Alaikum,

Thank you both so much for your sites. I REALLY REALLY appreciate them. I'm somali but I cannot cook anything so save my life. My mother knows a lot but she can't teach - its a pinch of this a handful of that...when I need actual measurements!

Thanks once again. And please add more!!!

  7. Assalamu Alaikum

Mine didn't turn out. The dough was too dry. I could barely form a ball.

  8. Assalamu Alaikum,

Hm, it sounds like it was too much flour maybe. I make these atleast once a week and never had that happen, did you use 2 tablespoons of milk not teaspoons? Other than that I would have no idea what else could be the problem.

  9. I figured out what I did wrong. I have the same recipe on my site (that just goes to show that I never make this dish. I didn't mix the wet separately. It really makes a big difference.

  15. Can you make the Kac-Kac a day ahead of time and store in a airtight container? Will it still taste as good? Thank you!

  16. Yes, just put in it in the refrigerator (because of the egg in it) and then get it out about 15-20 minutes before you use it. Getting it out a little early just makes the dough a little softer so it is easier to roll out.

  18. Oh, I'm sorry. Yep, you can. I have stored it for up to 3 days and it was still good. Hope this helps.
